The KwK 40’s design based on the 7.5 cm Pak 40, a similar towed anti-tank gun. It took over from the shorter-barreled 7.5 cm KwK 37, which had a 24-caliber length and was primarily used as a close-support gun. This transition marked a significant boost in firepower for mid-war tank models. The KwK 40 came in two variations, one with a 43-caliber barrel (“L/43”) used from 1942 through early 1943, and the other with a 48-caliber barrel (“L/48”) deployed thereafter. Alongside the Pak 40, the KwK 40/StuK 40 stood as the German army’s most prevalent anti-tank gun, maintaining its effectiveness until the conclusion of the war.
